► What is 7-Keto? 7-Keto is a trade name for the compound 3-acetyl-7-oxo dehydroepiandrosterone (aka 7-oxo DHEA) - a substance naturally occurring in the body. In fact, its presence in the human body was first documented by researchers in 1958.
7-Keto is metabolized from DHEA - it is a non-hormonal, non-androgenic derivative of DHEA - and, as with DHEA - its presence declines with age. Several studies indicate that DHEA levels decline by approximately 40% between age 20 and 40.
Importantly, as this decline takes place, several physiological changes also occur:
- The incidence of obesity increases;
- Reproductive functions/sex drive decreases;
- Basal metabolic rate (BMR) decreases;

Two comprehensive, independently conducted clinical trials support the effectiveness of 7-Keto for weight loss - the Peak Wellness Study (2000) and Minnesota Applied research Center (MARC) study. Key findings from these studies are illustrated in the above graphs. In short, both studies lasted 8 weeks and - non-placebo subjects were given 100mg of 7-Keto DHEA twice daily (total of 200mg/day). All participants followed a basic weight loss diet and exercise program - approximately 1 hour of exercise three times per week and a calorie restricted diet of approximately 1,800 kcals/day.
Both studies concluded that 7-Keto produced substantially (up to three times) more weight loss than diet and exercise alone AND that the majority of weight lost was fat!
In addition, in 2004 another clinical study involving 45 subjects was conducted in order to assess 7-Keto's effect on resting metabolic rate (RMR). Subjects (all overweight adults) followed a calorie restricted diet and either received a placebo or 7-Keto. Those individuals dieting with 7-Keto realized an increase in RMR of 1.4% - those dieting without 7-Keto realized a decrease of 3.9% in RMR - a 5.3% difference!
As many individuals who have dieted before know, it is indeed possible to lose weight with diet alone, however, most "rebound" back to their prior weight (if not higher) after discontinuing a diet. Part of the reason for this rebound effect can be attributed to a decline in RMR. The body, responding to a reduction in caloric intake and increase in caloric expenditure, slows down the rate at which it burns calories - this change can be both hormonal as well as due to a loss of muscle tissue. Thus, at the conclusion of diet, a dieter may in fact have a slower metabolic rate versus when he/she started....hence, consuming the same amount of calories after a diet as before can result in even more weight gain than what would have been experienced before the diet!
With 7-Keto, however, this issue is easily side-stepped!
