The Science behind the Soul of CHEWIES
Muscle hardening: Among other roles, branched-chain amino acids(BCAA) are used as building blocks in the synthesis of muscle proteins. Muscle protein synthesis is an essential requirement for the muscle hypertrophy (increase in muscle size) associated with resistance exercise (bodybuilding training). Without muscle protein synthesis, in other words, there will not be an increase in muscle size. Also, many bodybuilding supplements and processed foods are high in sodium. Sodium can cause water to move out of muscle cells and into the inter-cellular space (i.e. the space between cells). When this occurs, your muscles may appear “smooth” or “bloated” in appearance (loss of muscle definition and hardness). In addition, the movement of water out of the muscle cells actually promotes catabolism and atrophy - precisely the opposite of what bodybuilding is all about (i.e. anabolism).
Thermogenesis and ATP re-synthesis: BCAA can be oxidized in the liver and other tissues to provide ATP. Some of the energy generated in this process is invariably lost as heat. This is known as thermogenesis (thermo + genesis = “generation of heat”), and it leads to an increase in metabolic (i.e. calorie-burning) rate.
Nitrogen balance: The use of BCAA supplements to improve nitrogen balance has been widely demonstrated under a variety of study conditions. Leucine is has been demonstrated to be the most potently anabolic amino acid of those investigated.
Recovery: All forms of exercise result in the catabolism of BCAA, even if only to a minor extent. This is inevitable. Also, because resistance exercise promotes muscle protein synthesis, it encourages greater use of BCAA in the post-exercise (recovery) period.
